Despite Spokane Symphony canceling two other free outdoor concerts this year, the annual Lud Kramer Memorial Concert will bring classical music Saturday to Pavillion Park.

"It's really a fun event. I would not delegate conducting this show; sometimes I share it, but this year it's just me," Eckart Preu, music director of the symphony, said of the annual Labor Day weekend event. "This performance is much more relaxed and the music is much more fun. It's a unique experience at a great venue."

The Spokane Symphony announced earlier this summer that two other free outdoor concerts in the region were canceled due to lack of sponsorship.

"There is a lot of money, a lot of people involved," Preu said. "There is a lot of cost people don't see."

But in Liberty Lake, the free event is underwritten by Friends of Pavillion Park as part of the summer concert series.

Saturday's performance begins at 6 p.m. and marks the 10th year of the concert in Liberty Lake.

Saturday's program includes a variety of music ranging from Mozart to the "Jaws" theme song by John Williams. Williams also has composed soundtracks from other major movies, such as the "Indiana Jones" and "Harry Potter" films.

Sixty musicians are listed for the Liberty Lake concert, according to the symphony's program.

"Every piece in this program is selected for a different reason," said Preu, who begins his seventh season this year with the symphony.

He said one of the most important things is for the audience to recognize the music. Preu estimates that 80 percent of the music should be familiar for concertgoers.

"There is a special joy in listening to music you know," Preu said. "It is also fun to explore new stuff, and we do that, too."

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring low-backed chairs and blankets. Shuttle buses will begin running at 4:45 p.m. from Liberty Lake Elementary School. Kiwanis will sell refreshments.

The Lud Kramer Memorial Concert, which honors the founder of FOPP, precedes the symphony's Sept. 25 opening night at the Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox in Spokane.

Preu said Liberty Lake's annual show is important because they want to attract people to trying the symphony.

"We want people to be confident enough to spend money on the symphony," he said.
