Sydney Hamilton shows off her serious side during a recent photo shoot. Even though her looks landed her interviews with several Los Angeles modeling agencies, Hamilton said her personality, humility and sense of humor is what led to her being offered contracts.

Life doesn't always happen the way you planned. Liberty Lake resident Sydney Hamilton has found that can be a good thing.

During a trip down to southern California earlier this year, Hamilton was contemplating attending one of three Christian colleges in the area. But after meeting with several Los Angeles modeling agencies, she said the trip home had her questioning whether a full-time college career was the next step for her - especially after many of the agencies offered her contracts on the spot.

The Splash recently sat down with Hamilton to learn about her journey into the modeling business, her plans after high school and how she strives to be a positive role model for young girls.

Q: Have you always been interested in modeling?

A: Two and half years ago I did some group photo shoots for photographers and hairstylists from Spokane and Seattle. That got me interested. But I've always felt comfortable in front of the camera. A different person comes out in front of the camera. I can't give a dirty look to save my life, but I have a serious look in front of the camera that I can hold.

Q: How did you get connected with P.J. & Company Models (based in Liberty Lake)?

A: The modeling industry has a certain stereotype. I didn't want to get involved for that reason. My mom knew P.J. (Trzeciak) and she told me about her. It took me two weeks to get the guts to call her.

When I finally met P.J., she put me at ease that not everyone is superficial and out to get you. She's a strong Christian and she drew me to work with her. I did a runway show for Macy's at the Davenport Hotel that P.J. put together, as well as an all-day runway camp.

Q: How did you come to the decision to pursue modeling as a career?

A: I wanted to work in Los Angeles so I decided to visit three colleges in the area. When P.J. heard that I was going there, she offered to set up some appointments with agencies and lined everything up for my mom and I while we were there.

I went down with college on my mind, but five of the agencies offered to sign me on the spot. So I came home to decide whether I was going to pursue modeling or go to college.

I was really nervous to tell my dad because he's always said that college comes first. Once he reviewed the contracts and realized how rare it was (to be offered this opportunity), he took me back down to meet with the agencies again. Later my family got together over dinner, talked about it and we made the decision to go with an agency.

Q: What agency are you with and why did you decide on them?

A: I knew I wanted to still take some online college courses, so I narrowed my choices down to the agencies that were OK with me taking classes while working. I decided on Nous Model Management.

Nous is French for "we." It's a small modeling boutique that is focused on quality, not quantity. The owner has been in the industry for a long time. She seemed down to earth and very humble. I felt confident that they would look out for me and take care of me.

Q: Is being a model as glamorous as it seems?

A: Several weeks ago I did a photo shoot down in L.A. for the card the agency uses to advertise me. We took thousands of photos over six and a half hours. It was freezing cold, the wind was horrific and my toes were numb by the end. It's a lot of work and not always as glamorous as it seems.

Q: How do you take care of yourself?

A: I walk a lot and love being outside. I can't sit still for very long. Although I'm not buff, I do lift weights.

Also, my family owns a health-food store, Pilgrim's Market in Coeur d'Alene. Dried apples are the most dessert I ever get because I have some stomach issues that have pushed me to educate myself in health. Because I know so much, it motivates me to be more aware of my health.

Q: If you could be on the cover of any magazine, what would it be?

A: Either a really well-known fashion magazine, like Vogue, or Women's Health. I guess it depends on how they wanted me to pose.

Q: In your opinion, what is the best part of this type of job?

A: I try to be a role model for younger girls. Being a model can make people look up to me more. I look at modeling as a gateway to being something else. It's a huge door-opener for other opportunities.

Q: Do you have any plans beyond modeling?

A: Before, I had it all figured out. For the longest time I was determined to go into the health field. Now I'm just unsure. I'll be going to school while I'm modeling, and I hope to eventually end up on the UCLA campus.

I'm excited about what I can do with the income (from modeling jobs). My little sister asked me what I was going to do with the money, and I told her that I want to give back and help other people. I want to invest and save some, but there are certain charities that I want to help as well.

Q: What do you consider your best feature?

A: I really do care about people. It kicks me in the butt and it helps me out. Also, I'm funny.

My life motto is "everything happens for a reason." I believe good will come out of the bad and much of what I've been through makes me humble.

Q: Is there anything you'd like to change about yourself?

A: I'm too critical of myself. I probably need to be more confident. My heart goes out to little girls who need confidence.

Q: What advice do you have for young people interested in a modeling career?

A: Stay humble. There's nothing worse than someone bragging on themselves.

Also, remember that everyone is different. There are modeling jobs available for every type of person. Don't try to be someone you're not.
