With a young baby and toddler, Paula Conn never thought she could afford or endure an extensive outdoor photo shoot of her family.

But when Stacey Roessler, one of the members of the Liberty Lake moms' group she was a part of, offered to do a day of shooting for the members, she decided to take advantage of it. Conn was not disappointed.

Roessler came prepared with props and silly noises to get some cute, natural smiles from her daughters, while creatively working shots around a group of fishermen at the Liberty Lake County Park, Conn said.

"From the end result you would have thought we had the beach all to ourselves that day," Conn said. "Stacey allowed our family to just be ourselves and took photos of us that way. We didn't feel posed at all."

Roessler's knack for capturing the right moment has caused demand for her services from many Liberty Lake clients and led to the creation of her business, Roessler Photography, a few years ago.

"I try to take a photo essay approach where the photos tell a story," said Roessler, 37. "I prefer natural shots and try to look for everything that explains why you're there."

Roessler said her passion for photography clicked in childhood. She received a Polaroid camera one Christmas and took photos of everything including her dogs, family and friends. While her choice in cameras changed, Roessler's love for photographing scenery and sunsets on the California beach where she grew up continued.

In high school and college, she took as many photography classes as she could and spent many hours in the darkroom (back before digital photography entered the scene). Her involvement in sports during those years tied in with her love for photography, as she enjoyed shooting college sports.

"I liked the thrill of catching people in the action and the challenge of getting the best shot," she said.

In addition to doing photo essays and sports coverage for a college newspaper, Roessler worked on the side as a lifeguard and photographer's assistant to help pay for college. Even after she graduated from college and worked for Toyota Motor, she always had a camera with her, and people would request her services.

"I had a shrine (of photos) of my daughter, Kylie, in my cubicle," Roessler said. "People would stop by and ask me about them, so I just started taking family photos as a favor to people."

When Roessler and her husband decided to relocate to Liberty Lake, they found their current home by taking virtual tours online. After getting settled in their home, Roessler told their Realtor Julie Kuhlmann about her interest in pursuing photography.

Since a significant portion of her business comes from people taking virtual tours, Kuhlmann asked Roessler if she could photograph her homes. She's been using Roessler's skills ever since.

"I'd seen her work, and it was fantastic," she said. "Stacey can spot a lot of detail and little things in taking photos for real estate."

Besides making sure the technical aspects such as lighting are correct, Roessler said the challenge is to get those being photographed to relax. She said her easy-going nature helps take the stress out of family photo shoots.

"She's just patient and determined to get several good shots, no matter how long it takes," said Jennifer Spinden, another member of the Liberty Lake moms' group.

Spinden has used Roessler for two family photo shoots, and she said the candid shots are her favorites. She said Roessler is determined to get photos that clients are happy with.

"She does the posed shots that you want, but in between she just snaps pictures of the kids doing what they're doing," Spinden said. "At one shoot she might get a ton of great photos and then at another one she might have to work harder to make it happen."

Alicia Walker of Liberty Lake said Roessler is effective because she can relate to kids since she's a mother herself.

"I've taken my kids to photography studios before, and it's a foreign place with strangers trying to make them smile," Walker said. "The kids were very comfortable with Stacey. Their smiles were natural and not fake ‘cheeses.'"

Walker said one of her favorite shots captured she and her husband kissing while their children looked up at them. Roessler said this is a pose she often uses with families, and it produces a variety of reactions.

"On a recent photo session I had a little boy get very upset that his mom and dad were kissing, so he started pushing them apart and begged them to stop," Roessler said. "It was so cute to see his expression and reaction."

Roessler said she tries hard to get the perfect shot the client desires and considers herself successful if she can capture the moment for them.

"It's most rewarding when the photo comes out right and you've found expressions the client wants," she said. "That's why I started in photography."
