Commissioner sending $600,000 down the drain
Even after homeowners on Sprague, golfers, walkers and joggers had agreed no drainage problem exists on the driving range at Liberty Lake Golf Course, Spokane County Commissioner Mark Richard did not listen. He OK'd a $600,000 drainage plan.

Join me in backing Brian Sayrs - a man who listens.

Priority for a sports complex is out of touch with residents
As a four-year resident of Liberty Lake, I enjoy everything about our community. I try to walk two or three miles in the evenings - mostly on the trail system. I enjoy the parks and the fact they are close by and easily accessible from my home. I take advantage to attend movies and concerts at a number of the different neighborhood parks.

The way I see it, all of these contribute to the fantastic community of Liberty Lake that we enjoy. The City Council and Neal Olander need to focus on the needs and desires of everyone living here and not on some sports complex. These neighborhood parks, natural open spaces and trails should continue as a priority for all to enjoy.

Citizens deserve applause
I witnessed progress at the City of Liberty Lake Planning Commission meeting Aug. 27. It wasn't anything done by the planning commissioners, although in my opinion they made judicious decisions regarding the 2008 Comprehensive Plan, nor was it something done by any of the attending city officials, including myself.

A group of Liberty Lake citizens took the initiative to make sure you had the opportunity to have your voice heard regarding park planning. They went to great lengths to ensure the citizenry was made aware of and had the chance to participate in a community park planning survey. As a result, 484 citizens responded and completed the survey. Wow!

It is not my intent to delve into the results of the survey in this letter, which I am sure will be made public by those who worked so hard developing and gathering the data. The purpose of this letter is to say thank you to those who got involved and, in doing so, gave hundreds of you the opportunity to have your voice heard.

So in that light, let me thank Nicole and Jayson Hunnel, Seth Campbell, Kathy Whybrew, Frank Cruz-Aedo, Cindy Esch, Judy McGrady and all the others whose names I don't know, who helped your voices be heard.

In the short time I have been on the City Council, I and others have often discussed ways of getting citizen input and encouraging you to voice your opinions. The city: 1) mails out a monthly newsletter; 2) maintains a Web site that encourages your participation; 3) posts meeting agendas in public places; 4) provides newspaper advertisements and notices almost every week; 4) publishes e-mail addresses and phone numbers of your elected officials, and; 5) holds City Council meetings every other week.

But folks, nothing is going to be effective if you don't use these opportunities to make yourself heard. Please take the time to write an e-mail, make a phone call or, even better, attend a council meeting, because the best solutions are achieved together.
