School board switches chairs

The Central Valley School District board of directors shuffled a few responsibilities around Monday in its annual election of officers.
With the voting accomplished early in the meeting, Tom Dingus claimed the gavel as the new board president and ran the rest of the meeting, replacing outgoing president Debra Long. Amy Mason, who as a resident of the community represents Liberty Lake in CV's District 5, was selected as vice president. Mason was appointed to the position in June 2011.
With the exception of Board Member Keith Clark retaining his post as legislative representative, the board leadership positions are largely rotational, and no discussion was held among the five-person board as the changes were announced.
Long was honored by her fellow board members with a card and plaque marking her service.
"I know it comes every five years and we have our system, but it really is an honor to serve this board," said Long, who was first elected to the board in 2003. "Each time you do it, you grow by leaps and bounds. This is such an incredible district, and this job is made easy because of the people we have within our system."

Board Member MJ Bolt, who is wrapping up her first year of service, led all of the board members in thanking Long.
"Thanks for serving as my first president, fielding a lot of phone calls from me and being very generous with your time," Bolt said.
Board Member Keith Clark also thanked Long and wished her luck in her recent transition into another presidential role - leading the board of directors for the Washington State School Directors' Association.
In other business:
• CVSD Superintendent Ben Small said Mayor Steve Peterson of Liberty Lake and Mayor Tom Towey of Spokane Valley have each provided letters of support for a funding request regarding a planned second phase for Spokane Valley Tech. CVSD serves as the lead district among the four Valley districts that have developed and operate the skills center campus, which opens in January. The districts are asking the state legislature to approve $2.5 million in funding for a second phase for the project.
• The school board approved the hiring of Mark Weis as the district's new director of maintenance.
