Council loses Schuler

Liberty Lake City Council Member Susan Schuler announced her intentions to resign on Tuesday night, saying the meeting would be her final one as part of the governing board.

"It's been an honor to serve Liberty Lake," Schuler said. "We do have a very amazing community and I will miss it. I'll miss driving home and seeing all the pretty trees and all the green, but for personal reasons, I'm resigning my seat this evening."
In an emotional address, Schuler cited personal health and an impending move with her family to New Zealand, for "the simple life."
Business manager for Spokane Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Schuler was re-elected for her second term in Council position No. 1 last November. She has held the position since 2008. She is the second-most tenured Council member, behind Odin Langford, who was appointed to his post two months before Schuler took office.
"You're going to be missed on many different levels," Langford said. "I think I speak for the entire Council when I say that you did a great job and we appreciate everything you've done for this city." Advertisement
Liberty Lake Police Chief Brian Asmus also thanked Schuler for her service, pointing out her work on the Public Safety committee and support of the police department.
Schuler said she was hopeful to see a business-minded resident step into her vacated position. Looking forward, she urged the Council to consider creating an ADA-compliant entry to the library and to support staffing additions for the police department.
The city will be accepting applications for individuals interested in serving out the remainder of Schuler's term, which extends until Dec. 31, 2015. Complete information on how to apply can be found at www.libertylakewa.gov. Applications must be received at City Hall by 4 p.m. on May 31.
Interim City Administrator Mike Cecka said the city hoped to conduct applicant interviews and make an appointment at the June 5 meeting.
In addition, Cecka said his last day as interim city administrator with Liberty Lake would be June 1. The permanent city administrator hire, Katy Allen, will start June 4.
